Simply put, a mixed episode or 'state' is where symptoms of depression and mania and present at the same time.  A mixed episode may present with many of the characteristics of a manic episode, such as racing thoughts, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, but the person may also be plagued with some of the symptoms of depression, such as feeling worthless and hopeless.  The risk of suicide is particularly high during a mixed episode because the person may feel suicidal but may have the energy and motivation to act on these thoughts.
